Awesome Shoe Website!

So I Googled my shoes I just bought and found them for way below MSRP($30 under).  Kelly's Running Warehouse is the name of the company. I still recommend going into a running store to see what type of shoe to get, but go to this site to buy them. Shipping is FREE!

Energy gels...jellybeans...

So I've had a few people ask me lately about energy gels and Jelly Beans designed to help you during your runs. I think they are great for actual races and for your long runs, but not for your runs during the week. I like the GU Energy Gels because they tell you on the packet exactly when to use them.   They give me a boost of energy without making me feel wired or dizzy. Plus, there is no crash afterwards. I try to wash them down with some water, but they don't taste bad at all if you don't have water available.

Brenna's not a big fan of the gel feel, so she has tried the Sport Beans before. She liked the texture better, but said that it took a little longer for the energy to kick in.

Hope this helps.

Kip

Brenna's new shoes...

Nike Structure Triax +12. She went to the running store yesterday and found out that she's an over-pronater (No, that's not dirty)!

So these are the new kicks. She ran in them late last night and noticed a big difference.  It is worth going into a running store to get fitted for the right type of shoe.

How was your Saturday run???

Brady and I got 9 miles in on Saturday. I got hailed on and rained on and it was heavenly! :) Much better at 43 degrees than 78 degrees!

Gettin' ready to go for an hour run. Good luck this week with getting all of your runs in!

Friday, April 24, 2009

Hey whats up everyone? This is Tiff. I was just thinking if I was going to run tomorrow or sleep in and take a rest day because my foot and achilies are bugging me. But after reading how great you guys did in those races, I think I better get my butt up and run. And what is all this talk about 78 degrees being hot? Last summer I trained in the 90's at 6am for the St. George Marathon which turned out being freeezing and rainy. I would much rather run in the heat than the cold any day - does Brady have some issues running those hills in the snow. Ah what I wouldnt give for a good long hill right now to train on that down hill portion I am about to run in - OMG - 6 weeks!!! Yikes! It cant be that close allready! Help! Mary - we gotta do that overpass more - better yet - lets to Hardy Way!!! Ouch. Talk to you all soon!

The not fast but excited runner in Van 1.....

p.s. for my Van mates, when you are yelling out the window to me .... I like it Jillian style... Anger fuels me to run harder... What can I say .... I'm a red head - well until Mary bleaches me anyway!

Heat and Hills!

Whadup Wunnahs,
So our three Southerners(Tyson, Mary, and Tiff) have the advantage of running in the hot hot heat, but the rest of us need to get used to it. I ran 4 miles yesterday in 78 degree weather and roasted!  Just a reminder that last year's Ragnar was so hot that we each had 2 of our 3 legs in 90 + degree weather!!!  Yeah!

Remember that the name of this race is the Wasatch Back! We will all be running up and down hills and mountains. We want everybody to be happy and strong during this race.

So get out on the hot hills. These next few weeks are critical as to how well you will feel on June 19-20th.

GOAL Accomplished!

My goal for the SLC Half today was 1:45(8:00 mile pace) and I reached it by running 1:43:24(7:53 pace). That's including two "potty breaks" so I'm very happy with my time.

Congrats to Seneca who felt like garbage from being sick last week but still ran it in like  1:51 if I remember right.

I'm excited to be able to focus on my  L.O.R. now! LEGS OF RAGNAR! It's time for me to start training hard on the hills so that I can enjoy Ragnar as much as I enjoyed today's race!

Keep on keepin' on!

I ran 6 miles today!

So I ran 6 miles today, which doesn't compare to the 13.1 miles Kip and Seneca ran today for the Salt Lake City Half. I have a recommendation of not eating right before you go run. NOT GOOD!

Brady is a lil' Snow Bunny!!!

I just got a text from Brady saying that he's gonna go run the brutal 3-mile loop by his house tonight. By BRUTAL I mean it is straight uphill and downhill for all 3 miles! He lives up by Suncrest and there will probably be a foot or two of snow by the time he gets home and runs! Hence, the Snow Bunny name! Que te vaya bien primo!

I unfortunately have to succumb to the treadmill when I get home today because I am watching the offspring while Brenna does a couple of people's hair (Yeah she's a Cosmetologist). Then Brenna will probably go run after she gets done with that...right Brenna? :) She had a good work out at the Britney Spears concert last night and somehow ended up in the fifth row. Hopefully she didn't get too close to Britney and catch a disease!

p.s. How 'bout them Jazz??? lol

Tiff Toughs it Out!

Tiff e-mailed me and told me that she did 10 miles in the freezing rain on Saturday and did it in 1:34!  Nice job!!

Seneca has been battling through some sickness, but is still running as well. She is running the SLC Half-Marathon this Saturday. Good Luck!!

The clock is ticking!!!! Get going!

New Week, New Opportunity!

I hope everybody had a good week of training and a great run on Saturday. If not, you're in luck cuz it's the start of a new week so you can "totally redeem yourself" (Dumb and Dumber)

Brady and I are meeting up at 6 pm today to run. Brady's gonna be nice enough to run only 3-4 miles with me since the SLC Half is this Saturday. I get to take it easy this week!

Get on the road! Get on the Hills!!! Running hills strengthens your legs and makes the flat runs feel like you're floating!

Preventing and dealing with injury/soreness...

Wunnohs,
I've talked with some of you about running injuries a little bit. I found this artictle which I'll add to the running links(titled "shoe type" and "injury") which might help.

I went to the running store(Wasatch Running Center) yesterday because my arches have been aching since my 18-miler last Saturday. I've never experienced that pain before. My shoes are almost a year old and the guy at the store recommended I buy the new model of the shoe I run in(Asics-Gel Cumulus). Brady will verify this as well, but almost every runner has at least two pair of shoes that he/she alternates between. I've only been using one pair for the last year. Anyways, I ran in my new pair yesterday and noticed a tremendous difference in my arches, the tendons along the back of my knees, and my left hip which are my problem areas.

As we are all increasing our mileage, we're gonna feel new boo-boos. Alot of it can be caused by A)Bad Shoes or the WRONG kind(read the injury article), B)too much increase in mileage too fast, and C) Not enough recovery time or nutrition( Protein, Vitamin C, Amino Acids).

Hope this helps somebody if you're struggling in any of these areas.

p.s. I HIGHLY recommend going to a good running store and getting fitted for the right type of shoe. You'll know what I mean after reading the article(difference between Floppy foot, Rigid Foot, or Neutral).

Hello????

Hey Wunnohs,
Don't be shy. We all want to hear how everybody's training is going. There's 8 or 9 of ya that have signed on to the blog. Enlighten us with your goals and experiences.

The main reason why I ran my 18 miles last Saturday is because I POSTED it on here that I'd do it. That was my motivation and it worked because I really didn't want to run. SO try it out and see if it helps ya.

Set a goal, share it on the blog, and then return and report! :)

FOR EXAMPLE: I'm running the SLC Half Marathon in 10 days(April 18). My goal is 1:45 (8 minute mile pace). By posting this on here, I'll be thinking about it during the race regardless of wind, rain, pain, sickness, or mental fatigue on race day!

Motivation

After chatting with Kip on the phone last night I got excited about the Ragnar Relay. I have decided to put the rubber to the road. I went out and ran 3 miles and realized how out of shape I am. I've got a goal of 6:30/mile so I've got a lot of work to do.

Ragnar Video added to the running links!

For some of you who haven't ran this before, here's an idea of  what it's like.

Notice how almost every single shot involves somebody RUNNING!!!  That's the idea here, so keep pushing it.  There are plenty of runners not in this film that didn't train and are puking off the side of the road.

TRANSLATION: If ya want to be a Ragnar Movie Star,  Step yo game up!  :)

p.s. Congrats to Seneca for running 11 miles on Saturday. Just a reminder that anybody wanting to run the St. George Marathon, the 6 month countdown has begun. Brady and I have put in for the lottery.

10 WEEK COUNTDOWN=9 WEEK COUNTDOWN???

Hey,
I hope everybody got out and had a good run Sat. I thought the weather was gonna be horrible but it turned out just perfect for how I like it (mid 30's, no wind, and just a little snow).

Only 10 weeks left until Ragnar. That really means ONLY 9 WEEKS of training because you don't run hard the week of the race.

Only you know if you're doing a good job training or not. If you have questions or need help, talk to Brady. He can answer any running/Ragnar question you will have.

DID ANYBODY BREAK A PERSONAL RECORD or ACHIEVE YOUR RUNNING GOALS this last week?   Please don't be humble :) and share your accomplishments with the team. You never know how motivating it may be to somebody else. I know Mary and Tiff did almost 7 miles Saturday!  Good Job!

Treadmill tips.

Hey guys,
Tyson, Mary and Tiff may not have this problem down south, but the rest of us further north are dealing with the bad weather.  If you're like me, ya can't stand the treadmill, but some days it's the only option.  I did 50 minutes on one yesterday and almost fell asleep.  Plus, I feel like I'm goin' 100 mph on the treadmill and it says I'm 1-2 minutes slower than what I run outside. Frustrating!

Here's an article about how to make your treadmill runs more realistic to the road.   Also, it is a good idea for those of you with some uphill runs to set your treadmill to the grade that is posted at the bottom of your assigned legs.

Yeah I forgot how to add a link to a post. :)  I added it to the running links posted on the right. Could somebody please remind me how to add a link to a post? It's been a while.

I also posted Jeff Galloway's page on the Running Links because I'm currently using his program for the SLC half  (April 18th), Bryce Canyon Half Marathon(July), Park City Marathon(August 22nd) and HOPEFULLY the St. George Marathon(October 3rd).
